A Screening Window That Closes as Your Baby Grows
Two of these examinations are only possible in early infancy. Hip ultrasound using the Graf method depends on the hip still being primarily cartilage — as the socket ossifies, ultrasound gives way to X-ray. Spine ultrasound depends on the posterior vertebral arches remaining unossified, which allows sound waves to reach the spinal canal without radiation.
Most valuable when there is a clinical reason or risk factor, such as: breech position during pregnancy, family history of hip dysplasia or congenital heart disease, a murmur heard by your pediatrician, a hip click on newborn examination, a deep sacral dimple or skin finding over the lower spine, prenatal findings recommended for follow-up, or your pediatrician's recommendation.

Imaging That Moves With Your Child
Children's cartilage-rich, still-growing structures are especially well suited to ultrasound. Unlike static imaging, ultrasound is dynamic — the sonographer can scan while your child bends an elbow or points a toe, and can compare the injured side directly against the healthy one.
Most valuable when there is a specific concern, such as: a sports injury that isn't improving, pain or swelling after activity, overuse symptoms in a young athlete, recurring abdominal pain, abnormal laboratory results, a lump or persistent swollen node, a family history of thyroid conditions, or your pediatrician's recommendation.

These packages are sets of focused examinations — they do not replace state newborn screening, well-child visits, or your pediatrician's ongoing care, and not every child needs them. A normal result does not exclude every condition. Our clinical team reviews each request with your family to help determine whether a full package or an individual component is appropriate, and pediatric imaging is performed only when properly ordered and clinically appropriate.
Some situations need urgent care, not a scheduled scan. For an infant: difficulty breathing, blue or gray coloring, or poor feeding with lethargy. For a child: a suspected broken bone or visible deformity, severe abdominal pain with fever or vomiting, or a rapidly growing painful lump with fever. In any of these cases, call 911 or go to urgent care or the emergency department now — X-ray remains the standard first test for suspected fractures.
