Responsible Imaging

Highly Useful — but Not the Answer to Every Question

Ultrasound is highly useful for many superficial soft-tissue structures, but it does not evaluate every cause of pain. It has limited ability to see through bone and may not fully visualize deep structures. MRI, X-ray, CT, laboratory testing, or specialist evaluation may be recommended when appropriate — and when your results call for additional evaluation, we provide clear, documented referral guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can an MSK ultrasound evaluate?
It can evaluate many muscles, tendons, ligaments, peripheral nerves, joints, fluid collections, superficial masses, and foreign bodies — with the added advantage of real-time, dynamic imaging during movement.
Can ultrasound identify a fracture?
Ultrasound is not the standard examination for ruling out most fractures. X-ray, CT, or MRI may be required when a bone injury is suspected — if you suspect a broken bone, seek clinical evaluation first.
Can it evaluate a lump?
Yes — ultrasound is commonly used as initial imaging for a superficial soft-tissue mass. Some findings require MRI, biopsy, or specialist evaluation afterward, and your report will include clear guidance when that's the case.
Can it diagnose a pinched nerve?
Ultrasound can evaluate certain peripheral nerves and may identify findings associated with nerve entrapment, but it does not assess every spinal or neurologic cause of numbness or tingling. Your provider can help determine whether ultrasound is the appropriate first test.
Does the exam use radiation?
No. Standard diagnostic ultrasound uses sound waves and does not use ionizing radiation.
Can I scan my entire upper or lower extremity?
The examination is generally focused on a specific symptomatic area or clinical question — that focus is what makes the study diagnostic. Your team will confirm the appropriate study before scheduling, including when two related areas or a bilateral comparison is clinically necessary.
