What Is a Vascular Ultrasound?
Vascular ultrasound uses traditional ultrasound and Doppler imaging to evaluate blood flow through the arteries and veins, including the carotid arteries in the neck. It can help assess blood-flow patterns, plaque, narrowing, blockages, and other vascular concerns.

When Vascular Ultrasound May Be Appropriate
Vascular ultrasound may be considered for patients with:
A carotid bruit identified by a clinician
Known or suspected arterial disease
Symptoms or concern for venous blood clots
A previous abnormal vascular study
Prior transient ischemic attack or stroke under medical supervision
Follow-up after vascular surgery, stenting, or other vascular treatment
Known peripheral arterial or cardiovascular disease
Physician-recommended vascular monitoring
For carotid ultrasound specifically, age, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease may be associated with greater cardiovascular risk; however, risk factors alone do not make routine carotid screening appropriate. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends against screening for asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis in the general adult population because the potential harms can outweigh the benefits.
Important: Vascular ultrasound should be performed for an appropriate clinical reason. Each request is reviewed for clinical appropriateness before imaging.

One Important Part of a Vascular Evaluation
Vascular ultrasound evaluates blood flow through selected arteries and veins, including the carotid arteries in the neck. It can help assess narrowing, blockages, blood clots, and other blood-flow abnormalities. It does not replace other imaging, cardiac evaluation, laboratory testing, or emergency assessment when those are clinically appropriate.
A normal vascular ultrasound does not necessarily mean that a person has no cardiovascular or vascular disease.

What to Expect During Your Vascular Ultrasound

Before Your Visit
Vascular ultrasound generally requires little preparation. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being examined, such as the neck, arms, or legs.

During the Examination
You will lie on an examination table while gel is applied to the area being examined. The sonographer moves the transducer over the skin and records real-time blood-flow measurements.

After the Examination
There is no radiation, injection, or recovery period. Patients can generally return to normal activities immediately.
